Day 6 of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge with Leslie Saeta.

I keep coming back to this cottage.

Those of you who have been following my art for some time will know I first painted the cottages out at Steiglitz in an episode of the TV show ‘Plein Air Painting TV’

Then when we did the next TV show ‘Yes You Can Paint’ I painted out their again.

I took a group plein air painting out there, and have painted numerous versions of this cottage over the last couple of years from photos.

For those of you who don’t know Steiglitz … its an old (mostly) abandoned gold mining town in the Brisbane Ranges between Geelong and Ballarat.

In its day when gold was easily mined it was a boom town. Today little remains except for a few cottages and a couple of old churches.

So what is it about this old cottage?

I think its the mystery, the story and the history.

When you see an old cottage like this that is steeped in history don’t you just want to know who lived there, what their lives where like, what happened to them?

I am sure like many homes it had its up’s and downs, good times and bad, triumphs and tragedies.

One thing is certain … those who built in it and lived in the area are long gone while the cottage remains … home to another family.
