I grew up in the bush … or at least it was back then. Today it is probably another suburb of Melbourne.

Back when I was a little fella on the weekends at sun up a group of local kids would head off on mighty adventures into the bush. We would usually end up searching for yabbies in the local creek. It was always an all day adventure.

By the time the sun was starting to settle we would be just arriving back home. Mum would always be out the back door calling out for us … home at last!

For some reason I find myself drawn back to Steiglitz to paint the old buildings set amongst the bush.

Back in the gold rush era Steiglitz was a boom town. Today there are a handful of the original buildings left to serve as a reminder of the past. Steiglitz is located in the Brisbane Ranges and is nestled in a valley in the bush.

I first painted there in one of the episodes of the TV show ‘Plein Air Painting’ and then went back again for my next TV show ‘Yes You Can Paint’. I also taught this particular painting in a recent art workshop.

You know the song … ‘Give me a home among the gum trees?’

Well I was out visiting an artist friend of mine recently in Woodend up in the beautiful Macedon Ranges. When I left him I asked where was a good spot to do some plein air painting before I headed back home. He took me out to this spot on the road back towards Dalesford up on a hill with the Macedon Ranges and Hanging Rock in the distance.

It was an ideal spot for some plein air painting … old farm house, farm sheds, gum trees and views.

As I happily painted aways for the next few hours I could not help but sing the song … ‘Give me a home among the gum trees’

When I was a kid we would always go to Torquay for Christmas holidays.

Coming from Upwey it was one long drive.

The most boring part was the long expanse of not much between Melbourne & Geelong. Back then there really was not much in between.

By the time we got to Little River we were hot bothered and bored.

I remember my Mum would always tell us two stories about Little River … first was that the Little River Band (famous Australian rock band) got there name from there.

The second was the story of the grass fires that swept across the fields at Little River killing a whole lot of people. Not sure if that story was mean to cheer us up or not but it has stuck in my mind.

The band is long gone but the grass fires are still frequent.

This is a view from Little River across to the You Yangs.

I am looking to form a group of Plein Air Painters in Geelong who meet at least weekly for Plein Air painting around Geelong, Bellarine Peninsula, Surf Coast and beyond. We have some of the best locations around to paint and there is nothing that improves your painting faster than working direct plein air.

If you love to paint alla prima on location then get in touch.

Right now I am looking for a core group of committed artists who want to make it a regular (at least weekly maybe 2 to 3 times a week) and in time combine forces for exhibiting and marketing purposes.

Especially the early Australian Impressionists.

The so called ‘Heidelberg School’ of artist which included Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts, Charles Condor, Walter Withers and others were the first to really capture the essence of the Australian landscape. Working in the plein air these artists gave us a snapshot of time as Australia started to be developed. Of course a key to this was farming and in particular sheep.

The Shearing Sheds and Sheep are still here … not so many artists working in the traditional way though.

… or Mortgage hell if another drought takes hold?

It can be a fine line between success and failure.

The sower sows the seeds … destiny impacts the outcome.

As it is with painting. In the words of great Australian artist Allan Fizzell …

“The painter paints the painting … destiny takes care of the details”

Great advice. Keep sowing seeds. Keep painting!
